Parents

As a parent you are acutely aware of the potential threats to the health of your child. From what they eat to how fast they drive you try to make sure they are safe and healthy. Heart Screens for Teens exists to make sure your children are safe from Sudden Cardiac Death or SCD.

In the United States, the #1 Recognized cause of SCD is a heart muscle disorder known as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy or HCM. This illness, while rare, is thought to affect 1 in 500 persons of all ages. HCM usually manifests itself early in life (before age 20). This can often strike with no prior warning or symptoms in previously healthy young athletes.

Sudden Cardiac Deaths (SCD) are preventable. You can ensure your child is healthy and at minimal risk for competitive sports participation by:

  • Getting your child a routine Echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), which is effective in detecting many “silent causes” of HCM. This screening is an essential part of the pre-participation sports physical.
  • Getting your child a physical exam by a primary care provider (pediatrician or family physician).
  • Sharing your family’s complete medical history for both the physical examination and heart screening.

Sign your child up for a heart screening with Heart Screens for Teens and make sure you know the risks and take the necessary steps to keep them healthy.
